Monster
Duncan Macmillan’s play Monster at the Estonian Theatre for Young Audiences, in Mart-Matteus Kampus’s Estonian translation.
An inexperienced teacher is given the job of saving a disturbed and violent fourteen-year-old boy from permanent exclusion. Alone in the classroom, an intense battle of wills takes place. But what can be done when a child cares for no one and is afraid of nothing?
Monster won two awards at the inaugural Bruntwood Playwriting Competition and was first performed in 2007 at the Royal Exchange, Manchester.
Reviewing the production in Postimees, Pille-Riin Purje wrote about the Estonian title: „Leierdamata sõna, käändes mitmetähenduslik“ (a word not worn out by overuse, with more than one meaning when declined).
From the Estonian translationTal on null empaatiavõimet. Sa võid temaga juttu rääkida ja kui sa hakkaksid samal ajal surnuks lämbuma, siis ta lihtsalt mõtleks, et „okei, see vestlus on nüüd läbi“. Ta ilmselt istuks rahulikult edasi ja sööks lõpuni selle misiganes söögi, mille kätte sa lämbusid.
