Trafalgar Square stands deserted at 4 a.m., but back in 1913, suffragettes battled there for their rights. Tiananmen’s vast plaza saw someone fight the same fight—though history never recorded their name. When the Czech Republic upset the Soviet hockey powerhouse, Wenceslas Square was eerily empty… until, an hour later, it erupted with 150,000 roaring, tipsy fans.

Cities come alive through arguments and clashes, makeups and celebrations, sketching their own contours in the process. Yet amid the buildings and bustle, squares emerge like punctuation—exclamation points, commas, full stops. They’re voids waiting to be filled: markets and fairs spring up; bewildered tourists get swept through; four solemn pallbearers haul a coffin across (with a church or mosque always nearby, of course). And from one rises that spark-setting speech, plunging an entire nation into revolutionary fire, like flinging a torch into the night.

What happens on Times Square?
Out on Moscow’s Red Square?
What secrets does Venice’s St. Mark’s hold?
What will Paide’s Central Square witness next?

The promenade production Väljak premiereed June 2, 2023 in Paide Central Square.
